Welcome
The Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education designates distance learning as an umbrella term for several types of learning including online instruction. In simple terms, a student who completes coursework away from his or her campus is engaged in distance learning.
Delivery methods vary and may utilize any or all of the following: print material, e-mail, telephone, audio tape, video tape, television/VCR, satellite, or computer for access to CD ROM, interactive video, Internet, or the Web. The instructor may be physically separated from the student or may meet with students intermittently throughout the term.
During 2008-09, there were over 18,500 course enrollments through distance education. The largest growth in recent years has been in the number of online courses at EKU. They account for a 40% increase in enrollments over the past year.
Eastern Kentucky University utilizes a variety of delivery modalities for distance education as follows:
Interactive TV (ITV) Courses - More than 60 academic courses are offered by ITV each semester. A statewide network uses compressed video or two-way videoconferencing to link Kentucky's eight state universities together, as well as community colleges, EKU regional campuses and centers, public schools, and state agencies. This technology can and has been used for noncredit courses, other trainings, workforce education, including meetings and professional development. Two-way videoconferencing technologies not only connect several EKU campuses, but can facilitate the delivery of academic content to regional, state, and global organizations and businesses in the region and elsewhere.
Internet Courses - EKU offers Web-based courses for on-campus and off-campus students having access to the Internet. The list of online courses offered during the current semester can be located at http://www.eku.edu/onlinelearning/courses/. Additionally, fully online degrees offered through the EKU College of Justice and Safety can be found at http://www.justice.eku.edu/odems/onlineDegrees.php.
Kentucky Virtual Campus (KYVC) - EKU participates with the KYVC by offering online courses to students who access this portal for post-secondary education programs and courses from institutions in Kentucky. EKU offers both undergraduate and graduate courses through KYVC; the number of courses offered varies each semester. Through KYVC, courses may be offered via any combination of technologies including Web-based courses. Access to a wide variety of resource materials is available through the Kentucky Virtual Library (KVL). For more information, please visit the KVC home page at www.KYVU.org.
Eastern Kentucky University Libraries provide an array of services and library resources for students who are enrolled in distance education or online courses. Those various services can be found at http://www.library.eku.edu/distance-online-learning. Students may contact the distance education librarian at 859-200-1801 or email at distanced.library@eku.edu.
