Correctional Safety Officer Certificate Program

Tier I

40-Hour Program (4.0 CEU’s)
This 40-hour program is designed specifically for safety/fire officers working inside a correctional setting. The program will include related general industry standards as well as a review of the American Correctional Association standards related to fire and safety which are critical in preparing for ACA accreditation. This program recognizes the challenges faced by Safety Officers as they comply with OSHA Standards, ACA Standards, and the individual policies and procedures of their correctional institution. The program is based upon a job analysis completed with high performing incumbent workers in the Correctional Safety Officer position.

Objectives of the Program:


After successfully completing the program, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the duties of the Fire/Safety Officer specifically as they relate to ACA accreditation and OSHA compliance;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the OSHA Standards, relative to a corrections setting;
  • Assist their agencies in preparing for audits and inspections;
  • Locate safety standard violations and conduct a hazard violation workshop;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the Standards around fire protection and suppression systems and confined space areas;
  • Effectively use the ACA Accreditation manual as well as the OSHA General Industry Comprehensive Federal Regulations manual.

What the Program Includes:

  • Earn the Correctional Safety Officer Certificate from Eastern Kentucky University;
  • Receive credit for the OSHA 511 - OSHA Standards for General Industry Course;
  • Approved for 40 contact hours and 4.0 Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) from EKU Continuing Education & Outreach;
  • The ACA Standards and the OSHA General Industry CFR are included in the registration fee.

Tier II
40 Hour Program (4.0 CEU’s)

This 40-hour program is designed specifically for safety/fire officers working inside a correctional setting who have completed the Tier I Program and who wish to become an authorized trainer through Eastern Kentucky University.  Participants engage in practice teach pieces with feedback from instructors and other attendees.  Those completing the program will be eligible to train students in the 10-hour and 30-hour General Industry Safety and Health Outreach classes.

Lead Instructors in the Program

Bill Abney

 

Bill Abney has over 30 years experience in safety education & specializes in safety management and safety research, fire, arson, and explosives investigation, OSHA compliance, and hazardous materials. Mr. Abney is a retired Assistant Professor from Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) Fire & Safety Engineering Technology and currently serves as Course Chair for the EKU OSHA Training Institute Education Center.

Stephen C. Tussey Stephen C. Tussey has more than 30 years of experience in the correctional field and is retired from the Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Prisons. He has worked closely with numerous federal, state, and local agencies developing interagency agreements and emergency response plans for bio-chemical, fire, and natural disasters. He developed the first training agreement with OSHA, allowing the entire Bureau of Prisons’ safety staff to become certified OSHA instructors. Mr. Tussey continues to work in the correctional field as a Senior Safety Consultant with Creative Corrections, performing quality assurance reviews of correctional facilities throughout the United States.

Fire Prevention and Suppression in the Correctional Setting - CANCELLED

This workshop is designed to familiarize correctional safety officers with fire protection systems used in correctional facilities, including required inspection and maintenance procedures.

This program, hosted in conjunction with the Eastern Kentucky University Fire and Safety Engineering Technology Program offers an 18-hour course of study for Correctional Safety Officers and others charged with assuring operability of fire protection systems inside correctional facilities. Systems to be explored include fire detection devices, alarm devices, sprinkler systems, and fixed fire protection systems for specific locations.

Participants will receive hands-on experience in inspecting fire protection systems similar to those which are found in their facilities. Understanding the requirements of NFPA 25, Standard for Inspection and Maintenance of Water Based Fire Protection Systems is the tenant of this workshop.
